John Carmack speaking at Game Developers Conference 2004 confirmed that DOOM 3 is "really close; we'll be shipping it really soon now". He also spoke about a number of other issues, mainly they had thought of and dropped doing a Quake 2 remix, i.e. taking the game play out of Quake 2 and updating the graphics and sound. But saying that their next title he hoped would have a development time of a couple of years, rather then DOOM 3's 4 years.
