DOOM 3 server

by Paul | Permalink

As we've had some details of DOOM 3's multiplayer (ie it is client-server rather then peer-to-peer), it's allowed us to start getting ready for the big day! I've just finished working out a deal with the dudes over at UKGamer on providing a game server for us, the exact details are still being worked out as we're not sure how heavy DOOM 3 will be server wise. But it's as good as done.

Looks like you won't have an excuse not to be fragged by me after all.

Duffy interview

by Paul | Permalink

Gamespy had a few words with id Software's Robert Duffy regarding DOOM 3's multiplayer aspect. Here's a slice of the interview:
"GameSpy: What prompted the decision to move from peer-to-peer to the client-server model?

Robert Duffy: The primary reason is that, due to a variety of things, it was next to impossible to keep all the clients in perfect synchronization. That's a short answer to a difficult problem, but that's the bottom line of why we went with a new client-server architecture."

Doom 3 official site updated!

by Spineless-Mush | Permalink

The official Doom 3 website has just been updated with what seems to be the Flash interface from the bonus disk that was shipped with the Doom: Collectors Edition. Nothing really new, apart from the new menus, freaky sound effects, and a sample of the new Doom theme song.

Time columnist doomed

by Spineless-Mush | Permalink

More Doom 3 reviews and news coming our way! Time columnist Lev Grossman was given the opportunity to sit down and play Doom 3. Here's what he had to say:
"Doom 3 is scary: A couple of times — embarrassing but true — I physically jerked my head back from the screen. But there's other good stuff in there, too: The id team has paid a lot more attention to storytelling and voice-acting in Doom 3 than they have in past games. This isn't just a run-and-gun scenario; there's actual plot points and stuff. There's a more cinematic sensibility at work too — watch for some nice virtual camerawork in the cut scenes. And of course, the creature design has that signature sick flair that one expects from id's artists, who almost certainly were badly mistreated as children."

Nothing really new, though some mention of the plot and cinematics, which were oddly left unmentioned in the PC Gamer review. Read the whole article for the rest.

Demo, Linux and Mac OS details

by Paul | Permalink

Well Todd Hollenshead has updated his .plan with a few more bits of information - which cover some details like the demo, Linux and Mac OS.

A few bottles of champagne later (so excuse the typos)....

First of all, thank you to everyone who sent congratulatory notes on the GOLD announcement. I speak for everyone at id when I say I wish I could respond to everyone personally, but hopefully this general note can convey how much we sincerely appreciate the sentiment from everyone out there waiting for the game.

A few people have reminded me of some details omitted from my initial update:

Mac and Linux: Unfortunately I don't have dates for either of these. However, Linux binaries will be available very soon after the PC game hits store shelves. There are no plans for boxed Linux games. More remains to be done for the OSX version of DOOM 3 and that will take some time. We won't release the OSX version until it's just as polished as the PC version. The date for OSX DOOM 3 remains "when it's done", but I can confirm that it's definitely coming.

Demo: our priority was finishing the game first and now we are turning our attention to the demo. I don't have any information to share regarding any specific content, but I don't believe that we have ever disappointed in that regard in the past. We will release the demo as soon as it's done, but this probably won't happen until after the game has arrived on U.S. store shelves.

Last, but not least, the id Store: we will have copies of DOOM 3 available, but only after we get them. I'm sure that some of the hardcore game retailers will get them even before we do. Check our website for updates on this. We certainly appreciate everyone who has helped to make the id Store a huge success this year. By the way, more DOOM 3 T-Shirts just arrived, so those popular items are back in stock and will be available this week.

I understand that people have lots and lots of questions. We're working on pulling together some form of an official FAQ, but even though we're done we still have several responsibilities that are urgent as the game heads for retail. Please bear with us on this.

I know I owe you those preparation tips, but they will have to wait until tomorrow.

Multiplayer is client-server

by Paul | Permalink

Long ago back in the early stages of DOOM 3's development - back when multiplayer was still an unknown id spoke of using a peer-to-peer system for multiplayer - something that didn't go down very well in the community. Anyway UKGamer went ahead and asked what the deal with multiplayer was now. Todd Hollenshead replied:
"Multiplayer is client-server."

CD-ROM only

by Paul | Permalink

Chris Morris writes a few things DOOM related; largely a light round up of information in his gaming column over at CNN/Money he includes a few bits from id CEO Todd Hollenshead:
"I know some gamers are hoping to use the DVD players on their machines for something other than watching movies, but there are downsides," he said. "For us the cost of the goods and the cost of the replication and having to make two masters just isn't worth it."

IT'S DONE!!!!!!!

Yes, this is the official word that DOOM 3 has been code released and has been approved for manufacturing! It won't be long now until the anticipation ends and the PH34R begins ;-) We literally just hung up with Activision and have confirmed that our latest release candidate has been mutually approved and is finally GOLD. Thanks to everyone for their patience (yeah right! =) and for everyone at id, Activision and our numerous partners for helping us create what I believe is absolutely the best game we have ever made.

So, the next question is release dates. Retailers in the States will be allowed to pick up games starting at 12:01 AM on August 3rd. The official street date is actually August 5th in the U.S.A., but some of your favorite stores will probably have it early for those of you who have to have it first. Check with your local retailer for that information.

Internationally, the game will take a few more days to make it to the store shelves. The UK will probably get it first, on or about August 6th. Everywhere else will probably be Friday, August 13th (que Twilight Zone Theme) or close to that date, with just a few exceptions (e.g. Russia and Poland). This isn't because we don't have love for you folks outside the U.S., but the localization and manufacturing process takes a bit longer outside the U.S. where we will have JVC run 24/7 to get the units built. I guess the European manufacturers prefer to give their employees nights and weekends off. Go figure!

The champagne is flowing here at id and smiles abound!

I'll update again with some DOOM 3 preparation tips (not what hardware to buy - you'll have to wait for a programmer for that sort of thing). In the meantime, I want to see those "DOOM 3 GOLD!!!" threads set new records for swamping message board servers, destroying productivity, and post counts ;-)

Recapping today's headlines....DOOM 3 GOLD!!!

Update: A press release is now available on id's website.

IGN DOOM 3 Overview

by Paul | Permalink

Wester pointed me in the direction of IGN and their overview of DOOM 3, covering "everything they know". A good read for people who need to get up to speed on DOOM 3.
"Though it's obviously an action game, the team seem to understand what makes things scary and we can expect more than a little dose of horror with every run-and-gun segment. To begin with, there's a real feeling of isolation in the game and a profound absence of light. And if you don't think being alone in the dark is scary, I'll just point out that being alone and in the dark is the basis (and title) of one of the scariest games we've ever played."

You might also want to check out some of our articles by Nick P; Prelude to DOOM and Survival of the Fraggest. Which both offer details for those new to DOOM 3.

PC Gamer review

by Paul | Permalink

Thanks to Nik for pointing this one out, over at Shacknews some dude 'ezanga' has had September's PC Gamer mag dropped through his door. Here's a scan of the front cover.

Supported cards:

Gold rumours

by Paul | Permalink

This little scan has been making the rounds on many DOOM sites, indicating what Activision's marketing plans for DOOM 3 are, as detailed in the prevous news item.

DOOM 3 marketing scan

You should keep in mind that the official line is "id Software has made no announcement that Doom 3 has gone gold." This is purely a marketing run down for retailers, which are always sent out in advance - despite what other sites are claiming this is not a gold announcement or an indication that the game is complete.

Activision's UK marketing plans

by Paul | Permalink

In todays MCV magazine, a UK game industry trade magazine, it lists some of the things Activision will be doing to promote DOOM 3.
"Activisions biggest ever PC marketing compaign hits with the most hotly anticipated and terrifying game ever created. We said it will be out when it's done... Its done!

3 week TV campaign supporting Xbox launch and re-promote the PC.

6 month comprehensive specialist and lifestyle press advertising campaign.

Specialist and lifestyle online campaign targeting harcore and casual gamers.

Collectors edition Doom3 mini-mag inserted into all Future Publishing's specialist PC and lifestyle amgs throughout August/September.

Extensive Pre-order campaign running at retail.

Comprehensive 6 month instore marketing campaign supported with POS."

It's getting close, very close. Thanks to Nik for pointing this out to me.

Release speculation

by Paul | Permalink

Thanks to Chris Davis for bringing this to my attention.

Some guy over on the Futuremark forums is claiming to have the UK release date and RRP for DOOM 3. To quote:
"UK launch of Doom III pc = 13th August - unlucky for some, lucky for us!

there are two PC skus for Doom III

The version launching in August is a special edition which has an retail price of 45 quid. Seven weeks later the normal PC sku follows, plus the xboxen version."

Well they're saying a Friday which is correct as games in the UK are always released on Fridays. However only releasing the special edition first seems a bit "iffy" to me and at £45 (about 85USD) it's not exactly cheap. Obviously we won't know for sure until Activision or id make an official press release - which can't be too far away.

Also over on Doom3HeadQuarters there is a news post quoting the Norwegian release which, apparently is the same day, Friday the 13th of August.

Movie bits and peices

by Paul | Permalink

Over on Empire Online there's an article up on The Rock and what he's up to, here's the most interesting snippet:
"Spy-Hunter’s great. John Woo’s on board to direct. The script should come in, in about two weeks," The Rock told Empire. "I'm very, very excited about that. It's supposed to be shot in Prague and Amsterdam, but…" But? "You know how movie-making is. If we have to push it because of the weather and the Christmas vacation, then I'll probably take another movie with Universal called Doom."

He's not really someone I'd think of as the DOOMguy.

DOOM 3 to feature at QuakeCon 2004

by Paul | Permalink

The final details on tournaments at this year's QuakeCon have been unveiled. Not surprisingly DOOM 3 will be one of the games featured in the tournaments.
"Yes, you read that correctly. DOOM 3 Deathmatch is coming to QuakeCon 2004, and there has never been a more level playing field. With DOOM 3 launching this summer, there won’t be anyone who has had time to practice or master the game, and almost any QuakeCon attendee has a chance to walk away with one of the exclusive DOOM 3 prizes. We’re not telling you what they are just yet, but let’s just say that they’re fast. Registration for this 128-player tournament will begin August 12, 2004 – the first day of QuakeCon."

More details on the event itself can be found in the press release.

3rd of August release?

by Paul | Permalink

Gamestop are claiming to have a confirmed date of the 3rd of August for DOOM 3. They've also updated their box image. Several other retailers have moved their dates too.

This should of course be taken with a pinch of salt. Activision nor id Software have yet to confirm this date in a press release.

Thanks Nik for pointing this out.

New poll

by Paul | Permalink

Just shoved up a new poll, I'm thinking of providing hosting to mod creators, this is still in the idea stage, in that I still have no idea how it would be implemented or how I'd be able to afford it. But well we'll deal with all that later. If you've got any ideas or comments or wish to donate some webspace/bandwidth send them my way.

Here's the results for our old poll What do you think of DOOM 3 Xbox?:
I'm camping outside the store! - 9%
Can't wait for it, I really can't! - 6%
Looks very impressive! - 10%
Yeah good for an Xbox I suppose! - 9%
What a load of total rubbish! - 3%
Xbox WTF? PC rocks dude!!!! - 56%
Ahh WTF am I doing here ahhh! - 6%
Looks like one or two PC fanboys on this site.
