Barely a month has passed since Id smashed down store doors with another ground-breaking game and already many major modding groups are rabidly developing, even without the source-code release of D3's game dll. Among the aspiring groups is a project that is as hallowed to Id's First-Person Shooters as Capture The Flag - Team Fortress.
Project leader of the Doom 3 variant of the classic TF mod, photeknix, has had his team laboring away at the graphics and maps for D3F since the game went gold. Just four weeks after forming, the D3F project has now fully completed two maps: Hardcore and another that photeknix is keeping the public in the dark about for the moment. Accordingly, another five are currently being worked on simultaneously, while altogether 12 are planned for the first release.
With any TF mod comes a developer¿s twist that can either make or break it. Team D3F plans on staying mostly true to the classic form of game-play though, ¿There will be a few tweaks of our own for the new engine, but besides that it will play like Quake Team Fortress.¿ And certainly, anyone who has played Doom 3 may agree that tweaks on the engine will certainly be needed to play at the same pace as D3F¿s predecessors. As photeknix noted, ¿Doom3 is a laggy mofo, and really takes a beefy system to run, but it sure will make it pretty.¿
So, will D3F be on the top or a flop? As one critic in #doom3 of EfNET noted, "Anyone can write their name on the ground. That doesn¿t really mean that it belongs to them." And of course, the Team Fortress community has been known to be fickle in past games, as photeknix noted. However, visit D3F's website and view images of their maps in progress and model renders of Gas Grenades, eye candy pleasing to even the most demanding TF addicts, and skepticism subsides. "Many of us come from various fields and some other mods," assured photeknix, ¿we all have at least 5 years experience in what we are producing.¿ Predict as we may, only a few good hours of TF violence will spell D3F¿s fortune. And like many D3 gamers, I¿ll be waiting enthusiastically for that chance.
